After waiting and watching patiently for weeks our Pre-Primary boys have finally been joined by nine new baby chickens. The chicks will help to support their learning inside the classroom.

“This term our boys have been asking big questions about nests, eggs and the animals that make and lay them. So when some mysterious eggs arrived in the Pre-Primary classrooms the boys began to questions what type of animals could hatch from the eggs;  maybe snakes, echidnas or penguins? We were very excited to witness the eggs hatching and discover that they were in fact little chicks,” explained Pre-Primary teacher Brianne Utting.

The chicks aren’t just for fun, but rather part of an integrated project that covers science, literacy, design and technology subjects. After spending the last week learning about the chicks, the boys recently had the opportunity to create something exciting for the chickens to play on before they leave on Friday. Using their design skills and creativity, the boys worked in small groups to design and construct their own chick playgrounds and also completed safety checks before allowing the chicks to play.

Pre-Primary teacher Stacey McKenzie described the lessons the boys have learned this week with the chicks, “During our science lessons, the boys are currently learning about the needs of living things. Watching the chicks hatch and caring for them over the past two weeks has been a wonderful first-hand experience for the boys to care for living things.”
