Thirty-five boys, from Years 8 to 12, travelled to the Gold Coast for a nine-day Aquatics Tour in January. Teacher in Charge of Aquatics Luke Farmer said the 14 eager Year 8 boys on tour were excited about representing Christ Church in the pool in the coming years.

The tour group, supported by five staff members, was based at the Southport School where the boys completed two-hour training sessions twice to three times a day.

Christ Church water polo players competed in three games during the tour, against a Gold Coast Under 18s side, the Barracuda’s national league side and Trinity Grammar School. Other activities outside the pool included visiting the Mermaid Beach Surf Club and Byron Bay, paintball, Timezone, movies, ten-pin bowling, surfing and shopping.

“All the boys trained extremely well, whilst having a lot of fun,” he said. “They were outstanding – a terrific group of young men that were a pleasure to look after. The staff also seemed to have as much fun as the boys did!”

Mr Farmer said the aim of the tour was to increase the boys’ fitness base and skill level leading into the 2015 season. “The boys are now preparing for PSA swimming and water polo. We encourage them to work hard whilst having fun and enjoying the company of their mates, just as they did on the Gold Coast. The tour is another way of increasing their enthusiasm for the aquatics season.”

Firsts Water Polo plays Guildford this weekend, a bye in Week 2, followed by a run of tough opponents. The swimmers first swim meet is this Friday at St Hilda’s. In Week 2, the boys will join MLC and Iona for the Valentine’s Swim Meet at the CCGS pool.
